Parliament, Thursday, 9 October 2025 – The Portfolio Committee on Mineral and Petroleum Resources will tomorrow, 10 October 2025, visit Ekapa Mine (formerly De Beers Mine) in Kimberley, Northern Cape, as part of its week-long oversight visit to the province.
Ekapa Mine is confronted with several challenges, such as financial strain due to falling diamond prices, leading to proposed salary cuts and worker unrest, with NUMSA launching a strike over wages, working hours and safety concerns.
Meanwhile, environmental and social issues persist, including illegal mining, rehabilitation responsibilities and public opposition to a new mining application at Rooifontein due to ecological and heritage risks.
The committee will be briefed on these challenges, specifically on the mining application at Rooifontein, the labour issues and the mine health and safety concerns raised by workers.
