Parliament, Tuesday, 6 October 2025 – The joint parliamentary oversight delegation of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and the Standing Committee on the Auditor-General will continue its engagement with municipalities in the Eastern Cape tomorrow.

The delegation, in collaboration with the Eastern Cape provincial legislature, is engaging municipalities in the province about challenges and ways to address them.

Among the municipalities expected to appear before the delegation on Wednesday are the Chris Hani District Municipality, AB Xuma Local Municipality and Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, among others.

The delegation halted its engagement with the Sundays River Local Municipality on Tuesday and rescheduled the engagement for a time when the MECs for COGTA and Finance are in attendance to assist with answering members’ questions. Both Sundays River and the Makana Local Municipality will appear before the delegation on Wednesday. The two municipalities are among seven municipalities that the delegation heard were at risk of collapsing if they do not receive a financial injection.

These and other issues related to governance and service delivery in municipalities are expected to be discussed during tomorrow’s meeting.

The Eastern Cape is the fourth province where the joint oversight delegation from Parliament is engaging with municipalities that have poor audit outcomes and governance challenges.
