Parliament, Thursday, 16 July 2026 – A joint oversight committee meeting will be convened tomorrow (Friday) to discuss National Treasury’s decision to temporarily withhold equitable share funding from 69 municipalities.
The committees include the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and the Standing Committees on Finance, Appropriations and Public Accounts. The Minister of Finance, Mr Enoch Godongwana, will lead presentations from the National Treasury, while the Minister of COGTA, Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa, will lead his department in the discussions. The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and the Financial and Fiscal Commission will also make presentations.
The briefing will outline the rationale for the National Treasury’s decision, which forms part of government’s efforts to strengthen fiscal discipline, improve municipal financial management, safeguard public funds and promote accountability in the use of public resources.
