Parliament, Sunday, 12 October 2025 – The Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements will, this week undertake oversight visits to the North West and Gauteng provinces. The purpose of the visits is to assess the delivery of quality housing and the implementation of human settlements programmes. These visits form part of Parliament’s constitutional mandate to exercise oversight over the executive.

In the North West, the committee will engage with officials from both the national and provincial departments of human settlements, as well as with local municipalities. The committee will focus on evaluating progress in the implementation of strategic plans and projects, as well as to assess service delivery on the ground through site visits. The committee will pay a particular attention to the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati, Dr Ngaka Modiri Molema, and Bojanala district municipalities.

The primary objective of the visit is to assess the progress made in the delivery of housing and to identify any challenge that may be hindering the effective implementation of housing programmes and projects.

In Gauteng, the committee will meet with petitioners who have submitted concerns to it. These engagements aim to assess the responses and commitments made by provincial departments and municipalities, especially in addressing long-standing issues.

The committee has been actively engaged with the Department of Human Settlements in seeking resolutions on the upgrading of Slovo Park Informal Settlement and the MAWIGA (Mabopane, Winterveld, and Ga-Rankuwa) petition.

The committee regards the visits to the two provinces as worthwhile and a critical component of its responsibility to ensure that public resources are used effectively and that human settlements delivered are of high quality.
