Parliament, Wednesday, 24 April 2024 – This week the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs will undertake a two-day oversight visit to Gauteng to visit two Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) offices and the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

With the 2024 national and provincial elections scheduled for 29 May 2024, fast approaching, the committee will assess the IEC’s readiness for the elections. Since the 2024 elections will be the first provincial and national elections where the IEC will implement provisions of the Electoral Amendment Act, the committee felt it necessary to assess the state of readiness for the elections. Parliament passed the Electoral Amendment Bill in 2023, which opened up the opportunity for independent candidates to contest in the provincial and national elections. As part of the interaction with the Commission, the committee will assess how well Voter Management Devices function and will be briefed on logistical and regulatory preparations and staff readiness for the elections.

Meanwhile, the committee will also visit two Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) offices. The committee has previously committed to visiting VFS offices to get a first-hand look at operations, especially in light of the huge backlog in adjudicating visas and permits.
