Parliament, Sunday, 06 October 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs will visit the Department of Home Affairs and its entities as part of the committee's constitutional oversight role.
"Visiting the department and its entities provides the committee first-hand experience on the performance of planned activities and an opportunity to assess if targets have been met. At the centre of the need to undertake oversight is to ensure quality services to the people," said Mr Mosa Chabane, the Chairperson of the committee.
At the Department of Home Affairs, the committee will receive briefings on the current operations at the department, plans on how the department plans to improve the provision of services, plans to overcome the perennial long queues at frontline offices, and progress in implementing the Lubisi Report on the fraudulent issuing of visas. The committee will also consider an update by the anti-corruption unit in fighting malfeasance in the department.
As part of its Budget Review and Recommendation Report, the committee will receive a briefing from the Office of the Auditor General on the department's Annual Report and financial statement for the 2023/24 financial year.
Because the Border Management Authority (BMA) is important in safeguarding our borders, the committee will receive a presentation from the BMA and the National Treasury on engagements to resolve the BMA's funding shortfalls. "The effectiveness of the BMA hinges on the recently established entity getting adequate funding to ensure successful implementation of its mandate," Mr Chabane said.
The committee will also interrogate the recent death of a refugee at the Desmond Tutu Reception Centre in Marabastad, Pretoria, as part of its visit. When the incident occurred, the committee made a commitment to visit the centre and receive a detailed report of an investigation into the matter. The visit to the centre is the actualisation of the commitment made in August. The committee will also visit the Lindela Repatriation Centre to assess the living conditions at the centre and visit the Electoral Commission of South Africa's (IEC) offices to get a detailed briefing on the entity's performance for the 2023/24 financial year.
"Attaining planned targets is the foundation of quality service delivery, and our preoccupation will be to ensure that the department and its entities strive to attain those targets. We will also ensure that there is value for money for the resources we appropriate to the department and its entities," Mr Chabane said.
