Parliament, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 – The Portfolio Committee on Health will tomorrow have an engagement with the Elders on the National Health Insurance reforms. The Elders are a group of independent global leaders working together for peace, justice and human rights.

The group that was founded by the late former President Nelson Mandela is led by Ms Mary Robinson who is the former President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The delegation will include at least two other former heads of state.

The key focus area of the Elders is universal health coverage. The last engagement they had with the committee was a meeting which took place in 2019 at Parliament and which was attended by the former Prime Minister of Norway, Ms Gro Harlem Brundtland and the former President of Chile, and Mr Ricardo Lagos.
