Parliament, Thursday, 22 October 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Health will tomorrow receive briefings from stakeholders on the outbreak of gastrointestinal illnesses in Tshwane and matters relating to water quality.
The committee will hear presentations from the City of Tshwane, the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Gauteng Provincial Department of Health and the national Department of Health.
Media reports indicate that about 433 people have fallen ill in an outbreak of acute gastrointestinal illness linked to unchlorinated water supplied by the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works in the City of Tshwane.
The Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works has reported that it operated without chlorination from 24 September to 14 October 2026, due to disruptions with its chlorine supplier. During this time, the plant continued drawing water from the Bronkhorstspruit River, which suffered from severe sewage pollution.
