Parliament, Tuesday, 28 April 2026- The Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans, and the Joint Standing Committee on Defence will tomorrow visit the SA Shipyard and the Naval Base in Durban on a joint oversight programme.
The committees are on a three-day oversight visit to strategic partners to the South African National Defence Force. The committees will engage the Armaments Corporation (Armscor) on a number of vessels under construction, and they will also engage the commander of the Durban Naval Base on the status of the base and relocation plans.
The Co-Chairperson of the Joint Standing on Defence, Mr Phiroane Phala said: “For the Durban leg of the oversight we will also examine Armscor’s management of Project Hotel through our engagement, and we will engage Sandock Austral Shipyard about Project Hotel.”
“This project is important for renewing the Navy’s hydrographic capability. As with the Air Force component, we will assess this against the actual conditions faced by the SA Navy when we visit Naval Base Durban,” he added.
