Parliament, Monday, 30 March 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services will tomorrow receive a briefing from the Department of Correctional Services on the number of declared state patients detained in correctional centres, the legal and policy framework regulating the detention and management of declared state patients, the availability of suitable mental health facilities and the challenges relating to placement of state patients.

The committee will also be briefed on the measures in place to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and court orders and plans or interventions to address overcrowding and delays in transfers to appropriate health facilities. The meeting will happen in Parliament.
