Parliament, Friday, 4 October 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies will from Tuesday, 8 October 2024, assess the impact of the Department of Communication and Digital Technologies together with Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS) in the Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo district municipalities during a four-day oversight visit to the Eastern Cape.
The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa states that Parliament has the power to conduct oversight of all organs of state, including those at provincial and local government level. Also, Parliament and its committees have powers to summon any person or institution to give evidence or produce documents, and to report to them.
On Tuesday, the committee will meet at the Alfred Nzo District Municipality offices to be briefed by the municipal manager on the benefits and challenges of the department and GCIS policy programmes in the district. It will then conduct an inspection at the Emaxesibeni Post Office and Alfred Nzo Community Radio.
On Wednesday, the committee will conduct a series of inspections in Flagstaff in the Ingquza Hill Local Municipality, including the community health centre, library, post office, Inkonjane Community Radio and Sentech transmitter site.
The committee will then proceed to Port St John’s on Thursday, where it will first hold a meeting at the municipal offices followed by inspections at the library and information centre, health centre, post office and Sajonisi Community Radio.
On Friday, the committee will be in Mthatha, where it will first hold a meeting at the OR Tambo District Municipality offices and then inspect the Sentech transmitter site, the Department of Basic Education offices, Walter Sisulu University, Unitra Community Radio, Broadband Infraco’s point of presence in Zimbane, the post office, Mthatha Central Police Station and Mandela Park.
