Parliament, Monday, 25 May 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies will tomorrow, 26 May 2026, receive a briefing from the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies on the circumstances surrounding the withdrawal of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) National Policy document that had been published for public comment.
The committee has invited the department to account on the implications of the withdrawal of the policy document, the way forward regarding the development of a credible and consultative AI policy framework, as well as issues relating to consequence management following allegations that portions of the document contained AI-generated content with factitious and unverifiable sources.
The committee views the matter in a serious light, particularly given the strategic importance of artificial intelligence in shaping South Africa’s digital future and the necessity for public policy processes to uphold the highest standards of credibility, transparency and accountability.
