Parliament, Monday, 28 October 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies will tomorrow, 29 October 2024, be briefed by the department on the establishment of the State Digital Infrastructure Company (SDIC), which will be born out of a merger between Broadband Infraco and Sentech.
The government has long embarked on a trajectory to rationalise state-owned entities with the focus of optimising their performance. Thus, the Information and Communication Technology sector was identified as a critical lever in obtaining a higher growth trajectory in support of job creation, as well as underpinning the country’s embracing of the 4th industrial revolution.
The committee will also be briefed by the Films and Publication Board (FBP) on the implementation of the FBP Amendment Act, which came into effect in 2022 to expand the FBP powers to regulate online content. The presentation is expected to include the mitigation of online harms.
Furthermore, the committee will consider a report of its Subcommittee, which was established to shortlist candidates who should be interviewed to ascertain their suitability to be appointed and fill vacancies on the Council of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).
The ICASA Council is the highest decision-making body of the Authority and consists of eight members and the Chairperson. In terms of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa Act, councilors are appointed by the Minister on the recommendation of the National Assembly. The committee seeks to fill four vacancies.
