Parliament, Tuesday, 28 April 2026 – The Portfolio Committee will tomorrow undertake a walkabout at the General Overhaul contractor facility in Isando as well as the Braamfontein Train Depot.

The General Overhaul is the manufacturing and replacement of the old fleet with the new Blue Trains and to refurbish the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) rolling stock. The award of the contract for this work is subject to investigation by Public Protector.

The committee is on a three-day oversight of the PRASA facilities and other entities in the transport portfolio. The Chairperson of the committee, Mr Donald Selamolela, said a lot was said about the General Overhaul program which is meant to improve the transport burden on our people.

“Tomorrow affords the committee and the media to dissect fact from fiction. The program is reportedly on R7.5 billion spend and we are saying this is a good project and it cannot fail.” The committee will also conduct a walkabout of PRASA’S Braamfontein (Johannesburg) Depot.
