Parliament, Monday, 29 October 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Transport will tomorrow be briefed by the Department of Transport on the revised taxi recapitalisation programme and by the South African National Road Agency on Operation Vala Zonke.
The government’s taxi recapitalisation programme aims to improve public transportation by making subsidies available to minibus taxi owners to improve and modernise their taxi fleets. A review of the Taxi Recapitalisation Programme was commissioned in 2015 to identify successes, gaps and challenges, and it found a number of issues, including:
○Affordability of new taxi vehicles
○Quantum of scrapping allowance
○Extent of illegal taxi operations
○Poor quality of some new taxi vehicles
