Parliament, Thursday, 6 August 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Agriculture will today receive progress reports from the Department of Agriculture on the implementation of recommendations arising from the committee’s Budgetary Review and Recommendation Report (BRRR), the rollout of South Africa’s Livestock Identification and Traceability System (LITS), and the administrative responsibility for agricultural colleges.
The committee’s oversight comes at a time when strengthening livestock traceability has become increasingly important to improve disease surveillance, support compliance with international animal health standards and protect access to export markets. The committee will receive an update on progress made in implementing the Livestock Identification and Traceability System, which is intended to provide a national mechanism for identifying and tracing livestock movements.
The committee will also assess progress made by the department in implementing recommendations contained in its BRRR, including outstanding matters raised by stakeholders during previous oversight processes.
In addition, the committee will receive a briefing on the governance and administrative status of agricultural colleges, including progress towards improving institutional management and strengthening agricultural skills development.
