Parliament, Sunday, 28 January 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy will tomorrow (Monday, 29 January 2024) hold the last public hearings on the Electricity Regulations Amendment (ERA) Bill [B23-2023] in North West’s Ngaka Modiri Molema District at Zeerust Town Hal from 10:00 to 14:00.

The public hearings in Zeerust together with the other two that took place in Free State’s Bethlehem and Welkom on Friday and Saturday respectively are reconvened after they were cancelled last year due to poor attendance when the committee was in Free State and in North West to conduct public hearings.

The committee is conducting public hearings in line with section 59(1)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. According to this section, the National Assembly is required to facilitate public involvement in the legislative and other processes of the Assembly and its committees. It is against this backdrop that members of the media are invited to attend the public hearings.

The ERA Bill seeks, amongst other things, to effect amendments to the Electricity Regulation Act in order to improve its administration; to provide for the establishment of the Transmission System Operator SOC Ltd and also to provide for an open-market platform that will allow for competitive electricity trading.
