Parliament, Monday, 9 September 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Mineral and Petroleum Resources expects a briefing from the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Mr Gwede Mantashe, tomorrow, 10 September 2024, on the impact of TotalEnergies’ withdrawal from Block 11B/12B and Block 5/6/7 off the southern coast of South Africa. TotalEnergies EP South Africa holds a 45% and 40% interest in the two Blocks, respectively.
On 29 July 2024, the French multinational company announced in a press statement that it would exit from gas discoveries off Block 11B/12B, citing the withdrawal of its project partner, CNRI, as the reason. As a result, the company also decided to exit Block 5/6/7, entered in 2013, and made two gas discoveries, Brulpadda and Luiperd.
However, the company said that the gas discoveries could not be turned into commercial development as it appeared too challenging to develop and monetise them economically for the country’s market.
Minister Mantashe’s department is also expected to brief the committee on its legislative programme and timeframes.
The details of the meeting are as follows:
