Parliament, Friday, 24 November 2023 – The Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements will today conduct oversight visit to the Stellenbosch informal settlements.

The objective of the visit is to receive briefings from the affected communities, the Provincial Department Human Settlements, Stellenbosch Local Municipality, and other stakeholders regarding the implementation of the informal settlement upgrading programme.

The committee would like the provincial department and the municipality to present their plans for the upgrading programme for the 2023–24 financial year, specifically for Stellenbosch Local Municipality. The Stellenbosch Activist and a Volunteer wrote to the Chairperson of the committee requesting the committee and the national Department of Human Settlements to visit the Ghiff and Mountain View informal settlements that have been without basic services for over 15 years.

The people in those communities are living in appalling conditions, and they have requested the intervention of the committee and its assistance. Based on that, the committee decided to visit the area to have first-hand information and to see how the community's experience and challenges could be addressed.
