Parliament, Thursday, 17 July 2025 – The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education will tomorrow receive a detailed briefing from the Department of Higher Education and Training on the process followed by the independent panel appointed to select and recommend chairpersons of the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) Accounting Authorities.

This follows the committee’s earlier request for the Minister of Higher Education, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, to appear before it accompanied by her Deputy Ministers, the Director-General, and members of the independent panel to explain the panel’s processes and the rationale behind the appointments.

The Minister was subsequently compelled to reverse the appointments of certain SETA chairpersons after a public outcry over the inclusion of individuals with questionable credentials. The committee further requested disclosure of the independent panel members, which the Minister has since provided.

Committee Chairperson Mr Tebogo Letsie said, “We are somewhat pleased that this engagement will finally take place, allowing us to bring this matter to a close, as we have consistently maintained that accountability is non-negotiable when it comes to the use of public funds.”

The details of the meeting are as follows:
Date: Friday, 18 July 2025
TIME: 09:00–17:00
Venue: M514, Fifth Floor, Marks Building, Parliament
