Parliament, Friday, 27 October 2023 – The Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans will undertake an oversight visit to the South African Army Combat Training Centre at Lohatla in the Northern Cape Province on Saturday 28 October 2023.
The visit comes after six members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) perished during a fire at the training centre. This brings the number of soldiers who have lost their lives during training exercises and other official duties to 13, in what has been a tragic period in the history of the defence force.
The committee plans to assess the extent of work done by the Department of Defence and to familiarise itself with the training exercises at the Lohatla training centre. The committee will also engage with the leadership of the army and the more than 4 000 members still deployed for training purposes in Lohatla.
The committee had planned to visit the training centre at an earlier date but had to postpone its visit to allow the SANDF to bury their fellow soldiers.
