Parliament, Tuesday, 22 October 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation will this evening receive a briefing from the Department of Water and Sanitation and Rand Water on proposed interventions to address the current water challenges in Gauteng.
“While access to water is a constitutional right and must be accessible to all, it is concerning that South Africa’s economic backbone and the most populous province is facing its current challenges. The meeting will seek to evaluate planned interventions, implementation timeframes and collaborations with municipalities with the aim of resolving the current challenge,’ said Mr Leon Basson, the Chairperson of the committee.
Rand Water issued a stern warning last week relating to low reservoir levels, which pose a serious risk to residents access to water. In addition, the province’s persistent infrastructure challenges, which contribute to an average 46% in water loses, and the high demand for water in comparison to international standards are some of the challenges needing urgent attention.
“We are hopeful that following the meeting we will have tangible answers and workable interventions with clear timeframes to prevent a looming crisis in the province,” Mr Basson said.
