Parliament, Monday, 27 April 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education will, from 27 to 30 April 2026, embark on an oversight visit to Ehlanzeni and Bohlabela districts of Mpumalanga province to assess the state of general schooling and school infrastructure in the province.

The visit will focus on, amongst other things, monitoring progress made in completion of infrastructure projects, state of sanitation, eradication of pit-latrines, building refurbishments, and classroom shortages, Teacher-Learner ratio; classroom overcrowding; procurement; delivery of workbooks/stationery; learner transport, as well as National School Nutrition Programme.

Support for Rural Education and Special schools, School Governing Bodies, as well as Early Childhood Development centres to assess development of ECDC Practitioners, will also be under scrutiny of the committee.

The committee will begin its oversight programme by holding a briefing session with education stakeholders in the province at 20h00 on Monday 27 April at the Capital Hotel, Mbombela where it expects the attendance from representatives from the Office of the MEC and the Head of Department, North West Provincial Legislature, Provincial House of Traditional Leaders, district and circuit officials, association of the Schools Governing Bodies, Principals Association and Trade Unions.
