Parliament, Tuesday, 10 December 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will this week conduct oversight in the Eastern Cape’s Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo districts to engage with the National Initiation Oversight Committee (NIOC) and the Eastern Cape Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (ECPICC) on readiness for the summer season and to determine what plans are in place to prevent fatalities and casualties during this initiation period.

The oversight visit follows a briefing by the Department of Traditional Affairs and the NIOC to the committee last week.

As part of the programme, the committee will also visit initiation sites to monitor compliance with the provisions of the Customary Initiation Act. The committee will visit ‘hotspot’ areas in Mthatha, Libode, and Port St Johns. The 2024 summer initiation season started in various provinces on 15 November 2024.
