Parliament, Tuesday, 31 March 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) is convening a follow-up meeting tomorrow with the Free State provincial government to assess progress on challenges and issues identified during an oversight visit in July last year.
In the meeting, the province will report on the implementation of the committee’s oversight recommendations. The committee will focus on practical steps the province has taken to address systemic weaknesses across its municipalities. This includes persistent audit disclaimers, unfunded budgets, weak financial controls and the continued prevalence of unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure in these municipalities.
Members are also expected to enquire into commitments to strengthen consequence management, fill critical vacancies and stabilise municipal leadership and administration. Another key priority will be the progress on investigations into allegations of corruption, maladministration and political interference.
