Parliament, Wednesday, 26 August 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) will tomorrow receive a briefing on the Municipal Structures Amendment Bill (Coalitions Bill) of 2026.
The Bill, which aims to guide the establishment and management of coalition governments, was tabled in Parliament last week.
The Department of COGTA will present the Bill. Member of the National Assembly, Mr George Michalakis, will also provide input. This is to determine whether his Private Members Bill is sufficiently incorporated into the tabled Bill. Last year, the committee resolved to integrate the two legislative proposals – the department’s draft Bill and Mr Michalakis’ Private Members Bill – the Local Government: Municipal Structures Second Amendment Bill, which also sought to provide legal clarity and help stabilise coalition governments.
The committee will also discuss the timeframes for processing the Bill.
