Parliament, Friday, 4 October 2024 – The Standing Committee on Appropriations will embark on oversight visits to healthcare facilities in Gauteng, including a joint oversight visit with the Standing Committee on Public Accounts to Eskom’s Megawatt Park from 7 to 11 October. The committee has been vocal about its concerns regarding administrative and litigation processes due to medical negligence, which drain the already strained budgets of the healthcare system.

The committee will begin the oversight by engaging with the Auditor-General’s office to review audit outcomes for the Gauteng Provincial Department of Health. This will be followed by consultations with the Gauteng Provincial Department of Health to explore the extent to which legal claims have burdened its finances.

The committee will visit healthcare facilities to observe conditions firsthand and investigate the root causes of the escalating medico-legal claims. Discussions with hospital management, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders will help the committee identify any systemic issues or recurring patterns in these claims.

Regarding Eskom, the committee’s visit will focus on the utility's progress in addressing its long-standing governance, leadership and operational challenges and the impact of the R254 billion allocated to the company under the Eskom Debt Relief Act No. 7 of 2023.
