Parliament, Thursday, 7 May 2026 – The Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Thoko Didiza, will host a virtual Speakers’ Webinar to commemorate 30 years since the adoption of South Africa’s Constitution.

On 8 May 1996, the Constitutional Assembly adopted the final Constitution of the Republic of South Africa – a defining moment in South Africa’s democratic journey. To mark three decades since that historic milestone, Parliament will bring together constitutional institutions, civil society, organised labour and key social partners under one virtual roof to reflect on the Constitution’s impact on rights, livelihoods, cooperative governance and democratic practice.

Speaker Didiza will deliver the keynote address, focusing on “30 Years of Constitutional Democracy: Parliament’s Role and the Road Ahead”, while the Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Andries Nel, will make a presentation on the executive’s role, titled: “Defending the Constitution: 30 Years of the Executive’s Role”. Former Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Enver Surty, will moderate the discussions that will follow, with representatives from NEDLAC, labour federations and civil society leaders among the contributors to the panel discussion.
