Parliament, Thursday, 14 May 2026 – President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver his annual address to the plenary sitting of the National Council of Provinces’ (NCOP), which marks the closing session of the Taking Parliament to the People (TPTTP) programme currently taking place in the City of Matlosana Local Municipality in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality in the North West Province.

The theme for this year’s Taking Parliament to the People programme, which began on Tuesday, 12 May, and ends tomorrow, 15 May, is: “Ensuring a people-centred local government towards building better communities.”

Throughout the three days, communities have had an opportunity to engage directly with government Ministers, NCOP delegates, Members of Provincial Legislatures (MPLs) and local government leadership on critical service delivery matters relating to human settlements; mining, electricity and energy; health and economic development; as well as agriculture, water and sanitation.

The programme has featured public hearings, oversight visits to service delivery hotspots, and direct engagements with permanent delegates to the NCOP, Ministers, MPLs and councillors.

The initiative seeks to strengthen public participation, deepen parliamentary oversight, promote cooperative governance and bring Parliament closer to the people. As the parliamentary House representing provincial and local interests at national level, the NCOP plays a critical role in South Africa’s constitutional democracy through oversight of provincial and local government, cooperative governance and the protection of provincial interests.

Taking Parliament to the People brings democracy closer to communities by creating a direct platform for citizens to raise concerns and contribute to decision-making processes. The programme events have been attended by residents from across the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality.
