Parliament, Thursday, 5 December 2024 – The Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, will lead a parliamentary delegation on an outreach visit to Western Cape organisations working with survivors of gender-based violence on Friday, 6 December 2024.

This is part of commemorating the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign (16 Days Campaign), a United Nations campaign that takes place annually from 25 November (International Day of No Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day).

The delegation will engage with the NGOs to identify challenges and key issues for consideration and follow-up.

Parliament’s role as representing the people, also means that parliamentary structures and processes must adapt and respond to the national context. Over the years, Parliament has made great strides in passing legislation aimed at ending the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). A Parliamentary Oversight Framework on the National Strategic Plan on GBVF was also developed to ensure a coordinated approach for parliamentary oversight in addressing GBVF. The outreach visit forms part of this approach.
