Parliament, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 - The National Assembly (NA) will convene its first planning session on 12 and 13 September 2024 at the Good Hope Chamber in Cape Town.
The purpose of the planning session is to give an opportunity for the Presiding Officers and members of the National Assembly to outline policy priorities for the 7th term of office. The policy priorities will guide and direct the development of the strategic plan for the 7th Parliament.
The session is convened in accordance with provisions set out in the Financial Management of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act (Act 10 of 2009), which enjoins Parliament, after general elections, to start planning processes to develop policy priorities, strategic plan and annual performance plans. Section 14 of the Act requires that Parliament tables a strategic plan within six months of the elections. Parliament must, therefore, table the strategic plan by 29 November 2024.
The NA will give an overview of the session and outline the objectives and expectations of the two-day session. This will be followed by plenary discussions on themes such as strengthening Parliament’s accountability mechanisms and systems, responsiveness to the needs of people – legislation and public involvement and ensuring representation in public office appointments and international engagement. MPs will also focus on themes, including ensuring the effectiveness of committees and members’ capacity-building, programming activities, and collaboration.
Participants include 100 members of the National Assembly, as per the agreed formula for representation and as designated by party representatives.
The session is expected to adjourn at 13:00 on Friday.
Members of the Media will only be allowed a photo opportunity as well as attendance of the Speaker and House Chairperson’s remarks in the morning session on Thursday. The other sessions will be closed.
Members of the media who wish to attend the open session should send their details (Full names, name of the media house, and ID or passport number) to Mr. Modise Kabeli by e-mail at Mkabeli@parliament.gov.za , contactable on 081 715 9969.
