Parliament, Monday, 26 February 2024 – The National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will tomorrow, Tuesday, 27 February, hold plenary sittings to consider several bills before both Houses.

Passing laws is one of the major functions of Parliament. The institution is constitutionally mandated to pass new laws, amend existing laws, and to repeal old laws to enhance government’s efforts to improve people’s quality of life.

The NA sitting will consider the Public Service Amendment Bill, the Public Administration Management Amendment Bill, and the Statistics Amendment Bill.

Meanwhile, the NCOP will convene a virtual sitting to consider the Eskom Debt Relief Amendment Bill, Cannabis for Private Purposes Bill and the Divorce Amendment Bill.

Other items on the agenda for the NCOP sitting include considerations of reports of the Select Committee on Security and Justice. These reports outline the progress made on executive undertakings by the Ministers of Home Affairs and Police during the Taking Parliament to the People programme that was held in the Ugu District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal on 29 November 2023. The House will also consider a report of the Select Committee on Trade and Industry, Economic Development and Labour on the World Trade Organization Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.
