Parliament, Saturday, 29 March 2025 – Five Chairpersons of the National Assembly (NA) and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) oversight committees within the Economics Cluster will address the media on Monday, March 31, 2025. This event is part of the 7th Parliament’s Weekly Committee Cluster Media Engagement programme.

The Chairpersons will highlight the essential work these committees have undertaken since the beginning of the 7th Parliament, focusing on strengthening oversight, enhancing public participation, and advancing legislation within the sectors covered by the cluster.

The weekly media engagement series, which commenced in November 2024, plays a crucial role in promoting transparency and keeping the public informed. It provides journalists and citizens with vital insights into the functioning of Parliament, fostering a deeper understanding of its critical roles and enhancing accountability in governance.

The upcoming Economics Cluster media briefing will feature five committees as listed below:

1. Portfolio Committee on Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, which has an oversight role over the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. Its role includes consideration of legislation, reviewing budgets, monitoring performance, and ensuring compliance with international agreements related to forestry, fisheries and the environment.

2. Portfolio Committee on Land Reform and Rural Development, which oversees the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, along with its associated entities, including the Agricultural Research Council, the National Agricultural Marketing Council, the Perishable Products Export Control Board, Onderstepoort Biological Products Limited, the Ingonyama Trust Board, the Registration of Deeds Trading Account, the Agricultural Landholdings Account, and the Office of the Valuer-General.

3. Portfolio Committee on Small Business Development: The committee has an oversight role on the Department of Small Business Development and related entities, such as SEDA and SEFA, ensuring their effective functioning and promoting the growth of small businesses.

4. Select Committee on Agriculture, Land Reform and Mineral Resources: the committee oversees the work of multiple national government departments, scrutinises legislation and addresses specific issues. It conducts oversight over the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Mineral Resources, along with its entities.

5. Select Committee on Economic Development and Trade: It oversees the Department of Economic Development and Trade, including entities such as the Competition Commission, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the South African Micro-finance Apex Fund, among others.
