Parliament, Wednesday 01 June 2022 – The National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) have, during separate plenary sittings this afternoon, endorsed the appointment of Mr Xolile George as the new Secretary to Parliament.
Mr George, who has served as Chief Executive Officer of the South African Local Government Authority for many years, will be appointed on a five-year performance-based contract - with effect from 15 June.
The Eastern Cape-born Mr George becomes the sixth Secretary to Parliament since 1994 and is expected to strengthen the administration’s capability, to support Parliament’s execution of its constitutional functions. He is an accomplished leader, strategist, administrator and consummate professional with extensive experience in policy, legislative and programme implementation in the local, provincial and national spheres of government, amongst others.
Having led SALGA in the attainment of 11 consecutive unqualified audit reports and received awards in excellence in public finance management, Mr George brings with him a depth of knowledge in financial and strategic management critical to the leadership of Parliament.
Mr George possesses several educational qualifications that include a Master of Business Administration degree.
As Secretary to Parliament, Mr George will be responsible for heading the administration of the institution and governing the structures and strategic functions of the institution.
The Presiding Officers of Parliament have wished the new Accounting Officer well in his new responsibilities. They have expressed their confidence in his capability to lead the administrative arm of the institution in fulfilling its strategic objectives. They have also conveyed their appreciation to the Acting Secretary to Parliament, Ms Penelope Tyawa, for having held the fort over the years. She has steered the institution through some of the most challenging period of Parliament, and under her leadership, Parliament received five consecutive unqualified audit reports.
