Parliament, Friday, 9 March 2018 – The Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Ms Thandi Modise, will lead a multi-party delegation of Members of Parliament to the 62nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62) at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York from 12 to 23 March 2018.

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc), is a global policy making body dedicated exclusively to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The 62nd Session of the Commission will take place under the priority theme “Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls”. In addition, the session will evaluate progress in the implementation of the agreed conclusion from the 47th Session that took place in 2003, on “Participation in and access of women to the media, and information and communications technologies and empowerment of women”.

Further, the Commission will also consider and make recommendations on how best to utilise the year 2020, on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, so as to accelerate the realisation of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

In attendance at the 62nd Session will be representatives from member states, UN entities and Ecosoc-accredited non-governmental organisations from all regions of the world.
