Parliament, Sunday, 8 May 2022 – Oral questions and answers with Deputy President David Mabuza, Committee meetings and Budget Votes are among items featuring on the Parliamentary programme this week.

The Deputy President will, on Thursday at 2 pm appear before a virtual plenary sitting of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) to reply to oral questions from the permanent delegates.

The questions from the NCOP permanent delegates will cover, among others, the disruption of services in flood affected areas in KwaZulu Natal, the negative impact of bureaucratic red tape in supporting and stimulating rural and township economy, and the measures in place to ensure that members of the Executive are accountable to the Leader of Government Business for answering parliamentary questions from Members of Parliament timeously and comprehensively.

The National Assembly (NA) will kick off its weekly programme on Tuesday by holding virtual mini plenaries on Budget Vote debates for Statistics South Africa and Departments of Human Settlements, Health and Small Business Development.

Budget Vote debates are part of the Budget process. After the Minister of Finance has delivered the Budget speech, each Parliamentary Committee holds hearings on the Budget Vote for its department wherein the Committee asks the Department what it plans to achieve with its budget, evaluate whether the Department kept the promises it made for the previous year and whether it spent the taxpayers’ money properly.

On Thursday, the NA will continue with budget Vote debates for the Office of the Chief Justice, and the Departments of Higher Education and Training, Sport, Arts and Culture, International Relations and Cooperation, Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development and Public Service and Administration together with the National School of Government and Public Service Commission.
