Parliament, Sunday, 9 August 2026 – Among the highlights on this week’s parliamentary programme are the consideration of the Independent Municipal Demarcation Authority Bill, an oral question-and-answer session with members of the executive and the Women’s Parliament to be held in Kimberley.
On Tuesday at 14:00, the National Assembly (NA) plenary will consider the Independent Municipal Demarcation Authority Bill. The Bill seeks to repeal and replace the Municipal Demarcation Act of 1998. It establishes the Independent Municipal Demarcation Authority (IMDA) to determine municipal boundaries, delimit wards, conduct capacity assessments and establish an appeals mechanism in line with the Constitution.
At the same time on Tuesday, delegates to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will hold a Women’s Day debate commemorating the 70th anniversary of the historic 1956 Women’s March. This year’s national commemoration is being held under the theme, “Empowered Women, Empower Nations”, honouring the legacy of the women who fought against apartheid pass laws.
On Thursday at 08:30, the two Houses of Parliament, the NA and NCOP, will convene their respective Programming Committee meetings to plan Parliament’s business. The meetings will, among other matters, consider the draft programmes of the respective Houses, committee reports and bills before the Houses
.
On the same day at 14:00, Ministers from the Peace and Security Cluster (1D) and Social Services Cluster (2D), respectively, are expected to appear before an NCOP virtual plenary for a question-and-answer session with delegates. Cluster 1D (Peace and Security) comprises the Minister of Home Affairs, while Cluster 2D (Social Services) comprises the Minister of Higher Education.
Parliament uses a range of instruments to scrutinise and oversee executive action. Section 92(2) of the Constitution stipulates that Cabinet Members are accountable collectively and individually to Parliament for the exercise of their powers and the performance of their functions.
On Thursday and Friday at 10:00, Parliament will convene the National Women’s Parliament in Kimberley in the Northern Cape to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the historic 1956 Women’s March. The event will be held under the theme, “Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo: 70 Years of Resistance, 72 Years of Vision – Advancing Gender Justice, Equality and Resilient Economies for All”.
