Parliament, Sunday, 30 July 2017 - The Portfolio Committee on Environmental Affairs will this week begin public hearings on the Marine Spatial Planning Bill. The Marine Spatial Planning Bill aims to improve the way we look after the ocean in our economic exclusion zones. The Bill also recognises that we must co-ordinate planning in South Africa’s ocean space and use of the resources so they can last.

This Bill will also ensure that in future all the regulations governing the use of ocean resources are coordinated. It will also ensure that the regulations are based on what is best for the economy, the environment and society, and not on political considerations.

The Committee will hold the public hearings in four provinces namely, the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

Dates and venues of the public hearings:

  • George Civic Centre on 31 July 2017
  • KwaDaku Community Hall, Port Elizabeth on 01 August 2017
  • Cambridge Town Hall, East London on 02 August 2017
