Parliament, Thursday 22 November 2018 – Media is invited to join the Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Mr. Rasereti Tau, to a brief ceremony of handing-over the house to Ms. Charlotte Stuurman, a resident of Bongolethu township in Oudtshoorn.

The house handover is one of the notable successful outcomes of the oversight and public participation programme of the NCOP, Taking Parliament to the People programme.

In 2015 during the Taking Parliament to the People program in Eden Municipality, Mr. Tau came across an aggrieved citizen, Ms. Charlotte Stuurman, who uses a wheelchair. She relayed her hardship, highlighting that she lived in a rented house which was difficult to access with a wheelchair, and that it was her desire to one day have a house of her own that is wheelchair friendly.

Mr. Tau made an undertaking to Ms Sturrman, assuring her that her plight will be brought to the attention of key role players, chief amongst which the Department of Human Settlements.

The handing over of this house is another demonstration of how the programmes of Taking Parliament to the People enable intervention to respond to the needs of ordinary South Africans.
