Parliament, Wednesday 20 June 2018 – Parliament's Presiding Officers, National Assembly Speaker Ms Baleka Mbete and Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces Ms Thandi Modise, are deeply shocked and saddened at the tragic death of National Assembly Member of Parliament Mr Sibusiso Goodwill Radebe. News of his tragic passing away – as a result of injuries sustained during an attempted hijacking in Roodepoort last night – reached us this morning.

Mr Radebe, who was a member of the Portfolio Committee on Transport at the time of his death, first became a Member of Parliament in 2009. Before joining Parliament, he was active in and held leadership positions in a number of youth organisations, including the Mpumalanga Congress of South African Students, the South African Students Congress, the Young Communist League and the Mpumalanga Provincial African National Congress Youth League.

Parliament extends its heartfelt condolences to Mr Radebe’s family, friends and the African National Congress for this painful loss.

The criminal justice system is implored to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the criminal elements responsible for this heinous crime are brought to book.
