Parliament, Wednesday, 07 June 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs is disappointed that the conciliation efforts between the Department and the unions have failed to produce a positive outcome. The Constitutional Court had directed the department and unions representing staff at the department to engage in a process of conciliation at the General Public Service Sector Bargaining Council (GPSSBC) regarding the unions’ objection to new operating hours.

The Committee had high hopes that this process would yield positive results to create an enabling environment and a continuation of services on Saturdays in the interest of the public. The Saturday services have proved to be an invaluable addition to the service rendered by the department.

Despite this, the Committee encourages the department and unions to continue engaging with the aim of finding lasting solutions to this impasse. The central feature of these discussions should be the commitment to efficient and effective service delivery to the nation.
