Parliament, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Communications has welcomed the progress report on implementing the recommendations of the Ad Hoc committee on SABC Board Inquiry from the SABC’s interim Board chairperson, Ms Khanyisile Kweyama.

The SABC appeared before the Committee on Tuesday morning to report on its fourth quarter performance in the 2016/17 financial year, in which it reported a revenue loss of R1.6 billion.

Committee Chairperson Mr Humphrey Maxegwana said that the Committee is encouraged by the good work done by the SABC Interim Board to restore confidence in the public broadcaster, resuscitate the culture of good corporate governance and rebuild staff morale, which was lost in the recent past.

“Although we welcome the decision by the Interim Board to terminate two contracts, TNA Media Group and Lona Vision, which were pointed out to be problematic by the Ad Hoc Committee, we are concerned that the former Acting Group Chief Executive Officer has misled us in relation to the TNA contract. He repeatedly told the Committee that the SABC did not incur expenses to broadcast TNA Breakfast Shows, but the Interim Board Chairperson says SABC has spent R20 million,” said Mr Maxegwana.

Mr Maxegwana reiterated that the Board should charge the former Acting GCEO for providing misleading information to Parliament.

The Committee has also welcomed the decision by the Interim Board to accept the outcome of the independent disciplinary hearing on Mr Hlaudi Motsoeneng, which found him guilty of misconduct and recommended that he be dismissed.
