Parliament, Thursday, 22 August 2019 – The Portfolio Committee on Communications has elected a new Chairperson, Mr Boyce Maneli, following the appointment of the previous Chairperson, Mr Hope Papo, to the position of Parliamentary Counsellor to the Leader of Government Business, Deputy President David Mabuza.

Mr Maneli thanked all members of the committee for their confidence in him and undertook to work with them across all political parties.

The committee adopted its programme for the third quarter. Highlights of the programme include, among other things, a briefing on the reconfiguration of the Department of Communications and its entities; briefing by the Special Investigating Unit and National Prosecuting Authority on SABC investigations and; briefing by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) on its 2019 elections report.

The committee was also briefed on the legacy report which highlighted achievements and outstanding issues, including vacant positions at the Icasa Council, which became available towards the end of the fifth Parliament.
