Parliament, Tuesday, 3 March 2019 – The Portfolio Committee on Transport has called on the Eastern Cape Provincial Department of Transport to immediately see how it could help with funeral arrangements for the bus crash victims.

Committee Chairperson Mr Mosebenzi Zwane said the committee is gutted by what affected scores of pensioners and resulted in 25 of them perishing. “We send our condolences to the families and relatives of the deceased, and wish for the survivors’ speedy recovery. It is just hard to understand how this accident occurred.”

Mr Zwane said investigation needed to be conclusive and that if someone needed to be held accountable, that must happen.

A bus ferrying passengers fell off a cliff outside Centane, Eastern Cape, killing 25 passengers, and leaving scores of commuters injured. Recklessness and overloading are suspected to be the reasons for the crash.

It is sad to see a number of our citizens perish in this manner and perhaps the time is now that buses and bus drivers are continuously subjected to fitness. A compliance certification does not seem to be producing the desired results when it comes to passenger safety.
