Parliament, Friday, 12 May 2017 – The Joint Standing Committee on the Financial Management of Parliament would like to place on record the purpose of its meeting today, which was to hold a strategic planning workshop, facilitated by senior officials of Parliament.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Baleka Mbete, was invited to the workshop to deliver opening remarks on the strategic overview of Parliament.

However, over and above her remarks, the Speaker took clarity-seeking questions from Members of the Committee, before she took her leave, as per the invitation.

The Committee is disappointed by the behaviour displayed by some of its Members, who sought to suggest that the Speaker evaded accountability.

The Committee will continue, without fear or favour, to exercise oversight over the Presiding Officers of Parliament.
