Tuesday, 22 August 2017 – Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will interact with Parliament on two occasions this week, with the National Assembly on Wednesday and with the National Council of Provinces on Friday.

Tomorrow, the Deputy President is scheduled to answer questions for oral reply from Members of the National Assembly. The six questions which Deputy president Ramaphosa is scheduled to answer include topics such as the secret ballot vote on the motion of no confidence in the President, violence against women and children and plans to reverse entrenched patriarchal relations and attitudes, influence at Eskom, unemployment, recapitalisation and reform of state owned enterprises, aligning post-school education sector programmes to support the country’s human resource development strategy.

Answering questions is one way in which Parliament holds the executive to account.

Some of the rules applicable to questions to the Deputy President from National Assembly Members are that they must be scheduled once a month during session time, must be limited to matters of national importance, the number of questions is limited to six and the total time for replies and associated supplementary questions may not exceed three hours.

Questions to the Deputy President must be submitted to the Speaker at least 16 days before the question day on which they are meant to be answered. This for the Speaker’s approval as complying with the rules and guidelines, as determined by the Rules Committee.

On Friday, the Deputy President is scheduled to address a plenary sitting of the National Council of Provinces in the Free State. Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces Ms Thandi Modise has been leading the flagship oversight Taking Parliament to the People programme in Free State. The week-long programme, concludes on Friday with the address from the Deputy President.
