Parliament, Sunday, 31 May 2020 – The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) condemns the social media post of Danie Herselman likening the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to an animal.

The Portfolio Committee on CoGTA condemns the post with the abhorrence and disdain it deserves and hopes that Mr Herselman faces the full wrath of South Africans and the law. Racism has to stop, we cannot tolerate and allow such abuses to occur.

The post is derogatory, demeaning and racist. It is unfathomable how a rational person can write and post into the public sphere without thinking of the consequences and the harm that it will cause to the Minister and her family.

This post comes 22 years post democracy and disengages the progress we as a country have made towards racial harmony and social cohesion.

South Africans have the right to Freedom of Expression as enshrined in the Constitution, to say, write or print what they want, but this right must never violate anyone else’s right or break the law in any way, said Chairperson of CoGTA, Ms Faith Muthambi.

The Portfolio Committee on CoGTA stands by the Minister and assures her of their full support and calls on the South African Human Rights Council, South African Police and the Judiciary to take appropriate action against this person.
