Parliament, Thursday, 1 June 2017 – The Select Committee on Social Services has learned with dismay that the Nelspruit Office of the Department of Home Affairs had been closed over the last couple of days. While this office did eventually open, the closure impacted negatively on services rendered in an office that caters for a capital city of Mpumalanga and serves multitudes of people.

It is alleged that the Sheriff of the court attached furniture from the office, preventing the department from rendering services, a situation the Committee considers unacceptable.

“The department of Home Affairs is a crucial institution on many fronts. The closure affected issuance of death certificates, application and issuance of travel documentation as well as other civic documents that enable South Africans to carry on their daily lives,” said Ms Cathy Dlamini, the Chairperson of the Committee.

The Committee will urgently engage the department at national and provincial level to ascertain to reasons for the closure and plans to resolve the matter. The Committee is adamant that everything must be done to ensure that such legal matters are handled properly in future, to ensure that service is not affected.
