Parliament, Tuesday 8 February 2022 - Parliament wishes to clarify the misunderstanding regarding yesterday’s Western Cape High Court order with regards to the allocation of chamber seats for the State of the Nation Address, scheduled for Thursday, 10 February 2022. The Economic Freedom Fighters, the initiator of the court action on this matter, seems to believe that they have been allocated 38 seats for the physical presence of their MPs in the National Assembly. This is an unfortunate misapprehension on the part of the EFF.

In terms of the order, which basically affirmed Parliament’s determined seating arrangement, the EFF will be allocated 38 seats in the chamber for their representatives from both the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces. The total allocation of seats for the EFF, which is 38, therefore is not for their NA members only but is in fact a combined total of their representatives from both Houses, National Assembly (30) and the National Council of Provinces (8).

Any claim to the contrary is therefore erroneous.
