Parliament, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Francois Beukman, welcomes the appointment of Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as acting Provincial Commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

Lieutenant-General Makwanazi is an experienced manager with vast experience in operational policing and has served as Acting National Commissioner. The current security challenges in KZN – political murders, hostel violence and taxi-related crime – necessitates the skills and intervention of an experienced South African Police Service leader.

The Portfolio committee wishes Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi well in this very important deployment.

The Portfolio committee will tomorrow receive a briefing from the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner regarding the missing person incident of Katlego Joja in the jurisdiction of the Mamelodi West Police Station. The Portfolio committee is very concerned about the management of the incident and will interrogate the matter and the internal investigation that was launched.

Mr Beukman said that police station commanders should at all times prioritise the cases of missing minors. "Proactive measures should be taken to ensure that supervision regarding priority cases is closely monitored," Mr Beukman emphasised.
